It was officially reported earlier this year that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had joined the cast of director Nia DaCosta‘s spiritual sequel to Candyman, and what we had been told at the time is that the actor would be playing our new Candyman. But that’s now being called into question, as DaCosta has brought some clarification to the reports.
“Well, it’s been slightly misreported,” DaCosta tells Collider. “I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, “I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.’”
What should we be taking from all of this? It’s hard to say. But it sounds like Abdul-Mateen II may be playing an entirely new character who becomes the titular Candyman, meaning he’s not actually playing the role of Daniel Robitaille. Could that mean the door is being left open for Tony Todd to appear in the film? We’re thinking anything is possible at this point!
